Overview

Careem is a Dubai-founded "Super App" offering ride-hailing, food and grocery delivery (Careem Now/Quik), digital payments (Careem Pay), courier services and bike-sharing across the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. Founded in 2012 by Mudassir Sheikha, Magnus Olsson and Abdulla Elyas, it became the region's first unicorn and was acquired by Uber for $3.1 billion in a deal announced in 2019 and closed in January 2020. The business has since been split into Careem Rides (wholly owned by Uber) and Careem Technologies/the Super App (majority-owned by e&, with Uber and the founders holding the remainder), which continues to be led by co-founders Sheikha and Olsson and serves tens of millions of customers across 70+ cities.
